Chips, Cranes & Controversy: Odisha’s Race to a $1.5 Trillion Future

Odisha is no longer content with being India’s best-kept secret. From the hum of semiconductor fabrication units in Bhubaneswar to the clang of cranes over new industrial corridors, the eastern state is rewriting its own story at a breathtaking pace. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi’s $1.5 trillion economic vision for 2047 isn’t just a number — it’s a declaration of intent. But ambition rarely travels without turbulence. As schools shut their doors against a punishing April heatwave and nearly 10 lakh voters find their names missing from electoral rolls, Odisha’s rise forces a crucial question: can a state move fast enough to build the future without leaving its people behind?

Economic Surge and $1.5 Trillion Vision

Odisha is positioning itself as one of India’s fastest-growing states, with Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announcing ambitious plans for a $1.5 trillion economy by 2047. Speaking at the Business Eminence Awards 2026, Majhi emphasized the state’s transformation into a hub for industry, investment, technology, and innovation, moving beyond its traditional reliance on culture, heritage, and natural resources.

This vision aligns with recent industrial milestones, including the inauguration of India’s first advanced 3D glass substrate packaging unit in Bhubaneswar’s Infovalley by CM Majhi and Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. The Rs 1,943 crore facility marks Odisha’s entry into high-tech semiconductor manufacturing, attracting global players like Intel and Lockheed Martin.

Major Industrial Approvals

The state cabinet approved key projects to drive growth, including a Rs 124 crore yarn unit in Balangir to bolster the textile sector and western Odisha’s industrialization. Additionally, the Centre notified a dedicated rail corridor for Sijimali and Kutrumali bauxite mines, despite tribal protests, enhancing mineral transport and economic potential.

Other nods include the City Gas Distribution Policy for PNG and CNG expansion, amendments to the Stamp Act easing apartment common area transfers, and 18 projects worth Rs 3,877 crore via the State Level Single Window Clearance Authority.

Heatwave and Voter Concerns

A severe heatwave has led to school closures in multiple districts like Bolangir, Subarnapur, Kalahandi, and others, with IMD forecasting continued conditions through late April. Authorities prioritize safety amid scorching temperatures.

Meanwhile, controversy surrounds the deletion of 9.8 lakh voters from electoral rolls post-Special Intensive Revision, prompting BJD allegations of irregularities and calls for transparency from the Election Commission.

Odisha’s momentum reflects balanced progress in tech, industry, and policy, even as weather and electoral issues demand attention. These developments signal a vibrant future for the eastern state.
