Odissi music is regarded as a part of Karnataki music. The central authorities have not far been convinced to recognize Odissi Music as a separate form of classical Indian Music. It has developed an original form of music form the time of great Oriya poet Jaydev of 12th century. At that time singing of the great Sanskrit lyric Gita Govind written by Jaydev was an essential part of the daily ritual of Lord Jagannath Temple. After Jaydev, many Oriya poet and musicians composed innumerable Sanskit and Oriya songs. Among those who are responsible for the development of oriya songs, the names of Dinakrushana das,, Upendra Bhanja, Abhimanyu Samanta Sinhara, Vanamali, Kabisurya Baladev Rath, Gopal Krushna Pattnaik, Bhakta, Charan Das and Dr.Kali Charan Pattnaik are wprth mentioning.
Among the prominent musicians and music directord whose contributiobn for the development of odissi music will not be forgotten form the memory of the people of Orissa include Kabi Manjula Krushna Parsad Basu, Kabi Chandra Dr. Kali charana Pattnaik,Syama Sundar Dhir, Sinhari Shyam Sundar Kar, Nimai Charanan Harichandran,Balakrushna Das, Dr,Damodar Hota, Raghunath Panigrahi, biswanath Roy, Markendey Mohapatra,Akshaya Kumar Mohanty, Shantanu Mahapatra, Sribachha Pattnaik , prafulla Kumar Kar ,Chita Ranjan Jena, Pranaba Kishor Pattnaik, Mohammed Sikandar Alam, Bhikari Charan Bala, Radharani Mahaparta, Binapani Mishra, Indrani Mishra, Bhubaneseri Mishra, Bina Devi, Trupi Das, Naraingha Mohapatra,Narayan Prasad Singh, Nanda Kishor Singh, Guru Krushana Goswami, Kshirod Chandra Pothala, Pyarimohan Pati, Birendra Kumar Bhuyan, Tapan Pattnaik, Snehalata Mohanty and Loka Jaanahi Panda are reputed.
